Tracing movements of value requires discipline: each step must be documented, proportionate and capable of withstanding later scrutiny.

A transaction path is rarely a straight line. Accounts, intermediaries and jurisdictions are introduced precisely to interrupt the sequence, and each interruption invites assumption. Disciplined tracing therefore separates what is recorded from what is inferred, and states plainly which is which.

Documentation is the working product. Every movement of value is recorded with its source, date and the limits of what it establishes. Where a step depends on information that cannot yet be verified, it is marked as such rather than absorbed into the narrative.

Proportionality matters as much as thoroughness. The purpose of tracing is to support a decision — recovery, negotiation, or a decision not to proceed — and the work should remain aligned with that decision rather than expand beyond it.
