Early decisions about records, custody and sequence determine what remains usable months later.
The value of financial evidence is established at the moment it is secured, not at the moment it is used. Records that are copied without provenance, or gathered without a clear account of custody, lose weight regardless of what they appear to show.
Sequence is equally important. Preserving material before positions harden reduces the risk that relevant records are altered, archived or lost through ordinary business processes.
A preservation approach should be documented, restrained and capable of explanation to a court, a regulator or a counterparty.
